(the Other "KING" of pop?)

(Remarkably underrated brilliance. Far better than the critics realized)

(Love&Pride)

(love the 80's)

(A Blast from the Past! Brilliant! The Best of King!)
Well after watching his fun Videos on You-Tube. I decided to head over to Amazon and see if he was ever released on Cd. Low and Behold he was last Year! We all know Michael Jackson is the "KING of Pop" but Paul King's deep, lush and festive pop vocals are still fantastic today. In 1984 my good friend at the time Tracy Fink (RIP) called me and several other friends to call into our local radio station, KZZP and request love and Pride to try to crack the top ten that week on the countdown after she had heard it before any of us. We all did and it made it. Later at our local Hangout in Phoenix "hotbods" the song was frequently played along with the fun catchy video. The Cd is a fun trip dowm memory lane and the music still sounds upbeat and fresh by today's standards. I had the cassette tape(yes we had those back in the mid 80's) and wore it out . 24 years later I am still excited by the melodies and catchy Pop gems and fantastic remixes included on this Disc as I drive all over the Bay area. Thanks Amazon for this recent "Blast from the Past"!
Yeah, yeah... most people remember King for their biggest hit, "Love and Pride", along with the accompanying videos spray painted boots and Paul King's horrible green suit, which can still be seen in occasional rotation on VH1 Classic. People either recall this song/image fondly or harshly - I recall it fondly.

King burst onto the UK music scene in late 1984 with their top 3 hit "Love and Pride", though it wasn't released in the U.S. until the following year, and then only managed a chart placing in the 50's. What most people didn't know, including myself until I was doing research for an upcoming reissue of "Bitter Sweet", was that "Love and Pride" and "Won't You Hold My Hand Now" had been previously released as singles, along with "Soul On My Boots", all of which made little impact. It wasn't until a re-release that things began to take off.

King's debut album, `Steps in time', was a careful combination of chart geared dance pop and some of the wonderful New Wave eccentricities, which were becoming harder to find in 1984/85. The combination gave them well deserved chart success and a fanatical following... in the UK. As history states, Paul King had a real desire to become a hitmaker in the U.S., however the follow up UK hit, "Won't you hold my hand now" made no impression in the U.S. and the album (unjustly) faded into obscurity. It's unfortunate because there is not one bad song on that album, though some are not extremely strong. `Love and Pride - The Best of King' offers six of the albums original ten songs, along with one single B side.

Paul King had a knack for writing goofball lyrics and placing them over a catchy dance beat. The band hit their high point with their absolutely wonderful follow up album, `Bitter Sweet'. The album was released in the UK in 1985, though the U.S. remained nearly a year behind with a delayed, slightly altered release in 1986. King continued their UK streak of hits with the relatively enjoyable, but fairly weak "Alone without you". King's sense of humor came out all over the lyrics of `Bitter Sweet', and even in the video for "Alone without you". How many bands did you see making videos on mini-scooters? I cracked up when I saw it, and it endeared me to King even more. Unfortunately, if Paul King was truly trying to make it in the states, this approach was NOT the way to go. America generally steers clear of talent and personality.
The next single, "The taste of your tears", typically became a hit in the UK but was completely ignored in the U.S. By the time the band released the third single from the album, "Torture", `Bitter Sweet' was already heading for the cut out bins in the U.S.
The selection of `Bitter Sweet' songs on this CD is minimal. You get the three singles, one album track and three single B sides. "Groovin' with the Kings" is just an instrumental remix of "Torture", and is completely unessential. The bonus is the attractive B side piano version of "These Things", (The `rock' version of the song is on the UK issue of `Bitter Sweet', which was replaced on the U.S. LP by a reappearance of "Won't you hold my hand now"). The one missing essential track is my personal favorite King song, "Platform One". `Bitter Sweet' was a much stronger album than `Steps in Time', and could have been the start of a great run of albums.

Unfortunately, after `Bitter Sweet' failed to make an impact in the U.S., Paul King split the band and decided to do the solo thing. This time Paul got serious about trying to appeal to the U.S. market and teamed up with producer Dan Hartman to produce the remarkably dull album, `Joy'. For a man who once sang the lyrics; "I would tread water, I would swallow salt, rather than float with the tide. I'd grow potatoes in a flower patch, you know appearances don't keep you alive", he now sure seemed to be trying to fit in. I bought `Joy' at the time because I was such a King fan, but even that couldn't save me from the dullness. Here was an album of mature, wet, white boy soul music. The first single, "I Know" got modest video play, though it did nothing to help the album sell. Even in the UK, the single only managed a brief, low chart placing. I have to admit that I was pleased it failed because compared to the previous material, it was a slap in the face - Paul's plan backfired on both sides.

Paul King retreated from making music, and for a time was a presenter for UK music television. King was a very colorful and enjoyable band, and if the smell of international fame didn't tempt, as it does so many once-appealing artists, the future may have been quite different. Paul King has a wonderful voice and the ability to write fun, entertaining music. In this day and age where music has been dead for 15 years, at least to the ears of this reviewer, going back to my King CD's are more than nostalgia trips. This was quality stuff!

Well it's cool I finally got this CD. I still love all the tracks that I grew up on. You can still find Steps in Time around on CD I had it twice. I still have Bitter Sweet on Vynal. The CD is good but I really think Paul could have put more of Steps in Time songs on the CD. Those are the ones that really stand out.. Im suprised Classic Strangers wasn't on it or the other remixes? But instead it's more of his solo junk. That is when I gave on Kings music. He is a great artist but needs the cooky corky synths sounds to go along with it. But over all it was worth the money and I do enjoy listening to it..
Love the band King. I was a big fan in the 80's and I still am.Any King fans please email me at sdm0303@yahoo.com
Finally! I hunted down a King CD! I saw this group live a few times in the UK in the 80's. They were brilliant then and still are! Tracks to note are,"I Kissed the Spikey Fridge" (strange title but great track). Of course, "Love&Pride" - their most famous ditty. However, I also love "Alone Without You", "Torture", and "Taste of Your Tears". Take my advice...check out this CD if you have a chance and you like great British rock music!!
Budget priced 'Best Of' collection from new wave act best known for 'Love And Pride'. 18 tracks including Paul King's solo hit 'I Know' plus 'Love And Pride' (Body And Soul Mix), 'Won't You Hold My Hand Now' (Heavy Times Mix)&'Taste Of Your Tears' (Breaker Heart Mix). 1998 release. (Great FLashback)

(It's finally released!!)

(KING is KING!)
I was excited to Finally be able to get King Bittersweet on Cd. I especially enjoyed the Remixes-it took me right back to the 80's clubs I frequented in the 80's in Phoenix, Az. The music is fun and upbeat and still sounds "fresh" today.
How nice it was to browse through amazon to find that this forgotten gem has FINALLY been released on cd. In all honesty, Bitter Sweet isn't quite as good as Steps In Time, but the tracks Alone Without You, Platform One and 2 M.B. alone make this good reason to purchase this disc. Kind of odd though, now that this disc is released, it seems they've pulled Steps In Time from the offering. It's ashame the group didn't carry on, I believe there could have been a lot more to offer. Paul King's solo effort was a 2 star at best. But Bitter Sweet was definitely a bitter sweet ending for a band with a short lived history.
I was very happy when I found this listed on Amazon. The item was packed well and the cd is in AWESOME condition!
King grew out of the Reluctant Stereotypes, a highly-regarded but underachieving UK Coventry band, with musicians including former Members' drummer Adrian Lilywhite (brother of U2 producer Steve). They settled on a distinctive image - multi-coloured Doc Martens, with King himself resplendent in bright suits and cockatoo hair. As well as numerous bonus tracks never released before on CD, this package includes exclusive liner notes written by long-serving Coventry journalist Pete Chambers, who has followed the band's career for many years. There are also many unpublished photographs in the accompanying booklet.

(Second best TI CD)

(T.I.- King)

(The King)

(Love this CD)

(This is my S***!)
TI ain't new to the game. He first came out with im serious; which to this day still gets rotation. TI had some classic cuts on there such as still ain't forgave myself and hotel. He collab with mostly southern artists on their albums and a few r&b artists also. Most people was introduced to TI on his second cd entitled trap muzic which had summer cuts such as 24'ss and rubberband man. TI blew up after that. I don't need to go into the whole TI/LIL FLIP beef going on during that period. Even though this CD came out last year, I still jam it every once in a while. He really came hard with this cd. He was hungry and it showed. My cut's on here include king back, front back; which samples a UGK classic, what you know; the summer and club jam of 06, live in the sky. He dedicated that song to his fallen homies and those serving time in jail. Very deep; personal song. Other jams I was feeling was im straight, undertaker, ride with me, top back and bankhead. If you are a TI fan, cop this and the underrated trap muzic.
T.I has always been one of the more popular rappers. Everyone knows who he is and everyone likes him. But he really went out on a limb when he started sayin that he was king. I mean at the time he started sayin all that, he was still just another good rapper. And then he dropped King. And he shook the game up with this album. This was the first rap album since Get Rich or Die Tryin dropped that about half of america bought the week it came out. The only difference was that King was actually worth buying unlike 50s album. And then he started dropping singles that it seemed like every time you turned on the radio you heard something from T.I. And thats when he could officially say he was running the game. Because every time i got in the car a song from King was blaring out of my stereo. I mean the singles alone make the album worth buying from the rollin wit your dawgs "What You Know" to the reminiscent loss of a friend "Live In The Sky". Every single he dropped from this album was a huge hit. Thats when he locked the King title. And thats why King was a perfect name for the album. But that does not mean the album was flawless, like there was still a decent amount of filler on it like the flat out just boring songs "Told You So" and "You Know Who" just to name a few. But that said this album is still a great album and worth buying. I mean everyone loves the fast party starter "Get It" and the just flat out good "King Back" the only way to describe that song is perfect. I mean even if you dont like T.I. it worth buying, because this is gonna be the best rap album your gonna be able to find because the whole rap scene is just weak besides Young Buck, T.I., and Jeezy. And of those three T.I. has got the crown by a long wrong so buy IT!

Grade:
B

T.I. definently earned the crown with this CD. More than 'King of the South', he's the 'King of Rap' right now. Not one bad song on the album. When you put it in, you have to hear it all, can't just listen one.
The bass in this CD is awesome. I love listening to it in my car with my subs. Particularly loud are "Front Back", "Ride Wit Me" (which I can't listen to on full volume, since it rattles my brain), and my personal favorite, "Top Back". "Top Back" starts out with almost no bass, but quickly adds a mean bass line and, after TI proclaims "here comes the trouble homie", the lyrics.
I got that get it get it get it when you need it can't finish the rest to explicit but basically this cd is hot I love T.I.'s southern flow. My favorites are What you know, Get it, Standup guy, and You know who. This cd is a must have for T.I. fans.
"Tip" Harris better known as Atlanta rapper T.I., returns with King. After a year of Grammy, American Music, Vibe and several other award nominations, T.I. is set to rise to the next level. King is made up of equal parts club anthems, gripping street stories, and introspective cuts.

(This CD makes me step back in time)

(KING and for some reason my brain won't shut off!)

(Time stepped in...and it's about Time!,)

(My favorite album of the 80s!)

(An 80's Classic!)
Like the other posters here, I WORE the cassette out on this album back in the 80's ( my walkman too ). I think I bought it 3 different times. Definately a desert island disk for me ... I grew to really love the diversity of this album. The singles were infectious and groovy, but I think some of the best songs on here are the slower and beautiful melodies like Fools, Classic Strangers, and the reprise of Fish. Gotta love the the bonus remixes they threw on the CD ... that is the lucky few of us who have the CD. Damn hard and expensive to find these days. This CD is a perfect example of the question "who are these guys and why weren't they bigger?"
Paul King is brilliant, I bought the CD Steps in Time for the 2nd time. I had this album on tape and wore the crap out of it. There is just something to say about this album. KING was a brilliant perfomer, and one of those 80's bands that was too goo for his time. I remember playing this tape in my walkmen "YES" walkmen over and over. It's hard to believe that I use to listen to this coming from a small town. But It's was way ahead of it's time for us people living in a small town when only a few of us had big heaping Satellites that played MTV. This album is almost like a part or story to my life mainly because all of my memories still are because of the music I listened to in the 80's. I am just glad you can still find this on CD. It has inspired me as a musician and artist. I give this album props for trying new angles and re-defining music for it's time. Im not sure why I am re-writing another review on this but for some reason the music is still with me and I still stick this in the car and blast it!!! When my friends who are younger than me get into the car they ask WHO IS THIS!

All I can say is I lost something in my past, and it always comes back to this album for some reason. Anyways if you like King find me you may like what I do! Cheers

Thanks

(originally written in June 13, 1998)
I first bought the cassette version of this cd back in 1986, and I wore it out from playing it so much in my car. Since it was a limited international release it was extremely hard to find another copy. Thank you Amazon! "Hold my hand now" and "Fools" still floor me. If you love the 80's, King might have been a one hit wonder in the US but his music was beyond it's time. The remixes are a special bonus to enjoy this musical party of beat and rythm. King, where are you???

I never even saw King on MTV, but I did see the video for "Love and Pride" between films on HBO during the winter of '85. That was all it took to hook me. Let me tell you, that is NOT EVEN the best song on here! "Fish", "Trouble", "Won't You Hold My Hand Now" are ALL fabulous! What saddens me is that a year or so ago, CDNow offered this CD as an import for under $, then it was removed from inventory and now suddenly reappears for sale by someone seriously trying to take advantage of the situation. What a shame!

Paul King was a founding member of Mungo Jerry, recording that classic "In the Summertime" (He's the one on bango/kazoo/harmonica). After leaving Mungo Jerry, he formed the groups "The King Earl Boogie Band", then later, "Reluctant Stereotypes" (a ska band).

The band, "King" had 2 releases: "Steps In Time", and "Bitter Sweet". Paul King had 2 solo LPs as well, "Been In the Pen Too Long" (while still in Mungo Jerry), and 1987's "Joy", then spent some time playing Vee-Jay on MTV. In all his incarnations, he proves to be a brilliant and versatile writer/composer. These days, he works as a producer with other artists (such as Ludacris).

It's safe to say that he is TRULY underated. "Steps In Time" is a masterpiece! It needs to be released again on CD!!!
King had one thing going for him - talent. If you think this is just another 80's New Wave album, you are mistaken. Just listen to the Fish reprise. Paul King's voice and piano show the backbone of all of his music. He was one of the first to blur the line between New Wave, dance, and rock. A must-have CD!
